If LeBron picks anywhere but the Bay, the Warriors just told Steph Curry they’re done trying to win him another ring.
Steph is 38. The greatest shooter the game has ever seen has maybe two real title cracks left.
Look at the roster. Their second-best player is a 36-year-old Jimmy Butler coming off a torn ACL. Then they have Kristaps Porzingis, who just re-signed, but we all know he can’t stay healthy for more than 20 games at a time. So who’s the guy? Who’s the guy that Steph can lean on when his shots stop falling in a Game 6 in June?
Right now, nobody.
That’s why LeBron is the whole ballgame.
Of course LeBron at 41 isn’t the guy who dragged Cleveland back from 3–1. That version’s gone. But he’s still an All-Star, and next to Steph’s gravity, he doesn’t have to be a hero; he just has to be a co-star. Playmaker, closer, second engine. And he’s already grown accustomed to playing second fiddle to another star with Luka Doncic this past year.
From what it looks like, the only thing the Warriors need to do to sign arguably the GOAT is trade for Anthony Davis. They can get two all-stars for the price of one.
They can get two legit second options for Steph in AD and LeBron. When one of the two is injured, the other one can step up. And when everybody’s healthy, that’s a team you don’t want to see once April rolls around.
According to the rumours, the Warriors aren’t even engaging Washington on a Davis trade. They drafted rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, re-signed the same veterans, and are running back a team that went 37–45 and missed the playoffs.
What in the world are the Warriors doing?
The West is a bloodbath. OKC just won 64 games with the back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. San Antonio won 62 and got to the Finals, not to mention the alien is only getting scarier. Denver’s still got Jokic. Minnesota has gone to back-to-back conference finals with Ant. You’re asking a 38-year-old Steph to climb over all of that with Jimmy Butler off a torn ACL. Come on.
At the end of the day, this was never really about LeBron’s legacy or a cute Olympic reunion. It’s about whether the Warriors actually care about the back end of Steph Curry’s career. Trade for AD, then sign LeBron.
This is the last hope for Golden State. If the Warriors front office doesn’t act fast, we may have already witnessed Steph Curry’s last shot at winning a championship.
